지난 13일, 국립아시아문화전당 @asianculturecenter 에서 열린 《오픈 런(Open Learn) ACC》의 셋째 날, 대화 〈화면 너머〉를 진행했습니다. 강연과 워크숍으로 이루어진 이번 대화에서는 화면이라는 사물을 보기 삼아 표준이 만들어지는 배경을 살피며 효율과 경제라는 가치의 기능과 한계에 대해 묻고자 했습니다. 강연에서는 손에 쥔 휴대폰 화면 비율의 기원을 추적하며 와이드스크린 TV 디스플레이, 아카데미 비율 등 미디어의 역사에서 표준이 채택되는 과정을 들여다 보았습니다. 또한 화면을 구성하는 서로 다른 방식을 알아보기 위해 동아시아의 검색 엔진과 워드 프로세서의 사례를 알아보기도 했습니다. 이어서 진행한 워크숍에서는 전통적인 화면의 문법을 거스르며 가상의 화면을 나누고 채워보았습니다. 선의 형태와 개수, 배치에 제약을 두어 동그라미를 나누는 활동을 통해 위계와 의미가 생기는 지점을 탐구해보고, 평소 각자가 이용하던 서비스의 인터페이스를 동그란 화면에 옮겨 담아보며 기존과 다른 시각 질서를 구축해보았습니다. 긴 시간을 함께 해주신 참여자분들, 행사에 초대해주신 유진님과 진행에 도움 주신 위상은 학예연구사님께 고마움을 전합니다. On the third day of the Open Learn ACC held at the Asian Cultural Center on the 13th, I held a conversation Beyond the Screen. In this conversation, which consisted of lectures and workshops, I tried to look at the background in which standards are made, using the screen as an example, and ask about the functions and limitations of the values of efficiency and economy. In the lecture, I tracked the origins of mobile phone screen ratios and looked at the adoption of standards in the history of the media, such as widescreen TV displays and academy ratios. I also looked at East Asian search engines and word processors to see the different ways in which the screen is constructed. In the workshop that followed, participants divided and filled out virtual screens against the grammar of traditional screens. Through the activities of dividing circles by limiting the shape, number, and arrangement of lines, they explored the points where hierarchy and meaning arise, and moved the interface of the service that each person used to use on a round screen to build a different visual order. 국립현대미술관 서울 @mmcakorea 에서 열리고 있는 전시 《기울인 몸들: 서로의 취약함이 만날 때》가 어느덧 열흘 남았습니다. 혹시 지나쳤을지도 모를 미술관 화장실에 설치된 작업 〈격언〉을 소개합니다. - 〈격언〉, 혼합 매체, 가변 설치 saying, mixed media, dimensions variable 2025 〈격언〉은 오늘날 몸을 둘러싼 쟁점에 관한 글귀를 미술관 화장실에 설치한 작업이다. 화장실 안 벽면에 부착된 서로 다른 11개의 글은 몸을 나누는 체계에 문제를 제기하거나 포용을 이해하는 여러 관점을 제시한다. 공공화장실에서 볼 수 있는 디자인 요소로 위장하는 전략을 취해 미술관 곳곳에 자리함으로써, 〈격언〉은 견고한 사회 체제에 조용히 균열을 꾀한다.
