Do you dream of living in an off the grid yurt? Come try it out! Our dreamy garden-view yurt is on Hipcamp. Come stay with us! Link in profile or message me.
For years, Pip has been hatching chicks for us. She’s a reliable broody hen, and an excellent mama. But the hatch rates are often low, and this year we really needed to replenish our flock. We did something we’d never tried before- bought day old chicks and introduced them to Pip. It took a few tries before she warmed up to the spontaneous arrival of 7 chicks, but the adoption worked! #chickens #broodyhen
2024 was a big year! After 4+ years of building, we finally moved into our house. There is still so much to finish, but it’s been such a joy to spend time in this beautiful home. We’ve come a long way since January! #hhhousebuild #handbuilthome #offgridhomestead #vermontlife #vermonthome
When we designed our home (on graph paper!) four years ago, I imagined this nook filled with plants and the perfect indoor spot from which to enjoy winter’s beauty. There is still a lot of finish work to be done, and more plants to grow!, but it’s as beautiful as I’d hoped. #hhhousebuild #handbuilthome #vermontlife #offgridhomestead
Winter has officially come, and I’m so grateful to have this warm and beautiful house to cozy into. #hhhousebuild #vermonthome #offgridhomestead #handbuilthome
Hard to choose only a few favorite photos from this week’s trip to Italy. While I was born into a half-Italian family - hearing the language, eating the food, observing cultural traditions- this was my first trip, an advance celebration of next month’s 50th birthday! My dear friend Alexis was game to adventure with me to the beautiful Cinque Terre. We couldn’t have picked a better place for hiking, swimming, eating (so much good food!), and wandering the stone and tile-laid streets. If you like to geek out over travel planning, I’m happy to share the details. I booked all of our flights with points and stayed in an amazing hotel! #monterossoalmare #cinqueterre #italy
Back to back trips to the Maine coast for a training at Maine Coast Waldorf School and a camping trip at Warren Island State Park. Warren Island is only accessible by boat, and the weather (rainy in small pockets) meant that hardly anyone was there. We essentially had a 70+ acre island in Maine almost to ourselves. Unreal. #travelinghomesteader #mainesummer
July progress: downstairs floors sanded and finished, kitchen wall built and painted, and (for now) kitchen built! The kitchen is literally the center of this home and to truly do it justice we need time to save more money. Thankfully, Brian works as a builder by day and got many of our kitchen pieces for free or dirt cheap from remodels. These will last us years! The center island we are “auditioning” for workspace, flow, and cabinet needs. This version is 10’ long and about 4’ wide, with space for 4 counter stools. It also has a sink (yet to be photographed). Next up, mudroom tile! #hhhousebuild #handbuilthome #housebuilding #vermonthome #offgridhomestead
Progress is accelerating as we prepare to sand and finish the downstairs floors this week. Here’s a Before series, and I look forward to sharing some Afters next week! It’s crazy how much “unseen” work goes into building a house. Framing is so dramatic and quick, and then years of small steps finally lead to something that looks finished. As always, @acornhillhandcrafts is creating a home of exceptional craft and I paint a wall here and there and post pretty photos :) #hhhousebuild #handbuilthome #offgridhomestead
There is something about a rainy, cloudy week in the June garden that makes you feel like anything is possible! ❤️ (check back in with me in a week and see if the weeds are mocking me endlessly!) #hhgarden2024 #vermontgarden
A big push this weekend and our bedroom is almost finished! All we need is a few light fixtures and the closet interior. What a labor of love and craft this house will be. The floors are all locally milled wood, the window sills black walnut we brought from Oregon, the walls a homemade lime plaster, tinted with pigments. Our budget at this point is essentially zero, so we’ve been gratefully accepting free furniture from all sorts of sources. An art deco vanity turned into two side tables. A side-of-the-road giveaway table holds a ReStore lamp. So excited to sleep in this special room! #hhhousebuild #handbuilthome #housebuilding #vermontlife #offgridhomestead #limeplaster
A huge milestone - after 4 years of carrying water in buckets and watering everything by hand, we now have pressurized running water and a HOSE! So excited for this development and my garden will be too! #hhhousebuild #offgridliving
