Funding to autonomous vehicle startups has more than tripled in 2026, hitting a record $21.4 billion across just 34 deals through mid-April — up 262% compared to all of 2025, according to Crunchbase data. Three quarters of that total came from a single round: Waymo's $16 billion Series D in February, which valued the company at $126 billion. Shield AI and London-based Wayve also raised multibillion-dollar rounds. The shift signals a broader change in investor strategy — from spreading small bets across dozens of startups to concentrating billions into the three or four players seen as most likely to dominate the market. China is meanwhile seeing the fastest growth in actual deployment, with Chinese startups also capturing some of the largest rounds outside the US. #AutonomousVehicles #Waymo #AI #StartupFunding #SelfDrivingCars
In 1945, German submarine U-1206 sank not from battle damage but from a bizarre accident involving its crew toilet. Submarines used complex pressurized systems for waste disposal, and when the captain improperly operated it, opening the wrong valve while submerged, seawater flooded the boat. The malfunction spread to the central battery compartment, disabling power and forcing the crew to surface. With enemy forces nearby, the U-boat was effectively lost. This infamous mishap remains one of the most unusual causes of a military vessel’s sinking in WWII history. #historyfacts #WWII #Uboat #navalhistory #Germany
A study of over 600,000 people found that developing obesity between ages 17 and 29 is linked to a 70% higher risk of premature death compared to those who stayed below the obesity threshold until 60. Lund University researchers say the key factor may be duration — the longer the body lives with obesity, the greater the cumulative biological toll. #Health #Obesity #PublicHealth #Medicine #Science
