Sport pictograms for Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 @olympics On 25 January 2017, the Organising Committee for the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang (POCOG) unveiled the official sport pictograms that will be used to represent each of the events at next year’s Games. The pictograms are always a core part of the look and feel of each edition of an Olympic Games, and also a vital international “shorthand” for Olympic fans around the world. The design of the pictograms for PyeongChang is based on the Korean script or ‘Hangeul’, which was an alphabet developed in Korea in the 15th century and is still used today. As well as providing fans with an insight into Korean culture, the slanted and curved lines of the Hangeul characters have been used to create dynamic images that capture the movements of the athletes and seek to embody the Olympic spirit. The pictograms for the Games have been designed based on Hangeul, the Korean alphabet, which is an excellent system of letters unique to Korea. Hangeul, used as a motif for the emblem of PyeongChang 2018, represents the identity of the Games. The shape of the lines of the Hangeul letters "ᄑ" and "ᄎ" from "평창," the Korean word for PyeongChang and the commonality found in the shape of consonants and vowels of Hangeul have been analysed and reflected in the pictograms, thus representing the identity of the Games through the identity of Hangeul. Through it, the unique beauty of Hangeul and the image of Korea are introduced to the world. Also, through the pictograms, the Olympic spirit is expressed such as the infinite potential, the challenging spirit and passion that athletes will show in each game so that it can be shared among people across the world.

SM 픽토그램 프로젝트의 비전은 SM엔터테인먼트의 아이덴티티를 보편적인 시각 표현 체계로 발전시키는 것입니다. 통합된 픽토그램 언어를 개발함으로써, 이 프로젝트는 브랜드 고유의 상징적 성격을 유지하면서도 직관적으로 소통할 수 있도록 하는 것을 목표로 합니다. 이를 통해 SM의 아이덴티티를 일상적인 맥락 속으로 확장하고, 브랜드의 창의적 철학을 표현할 수 있는 지속 가능한 체계를 구축합니다. 픽토그램은 SM 심볼의 여섯 가지 핵심 원칙을 기반으로 디자인되었습니다. 꼬인 형태, 45도 각도, 둥근 마감선, 기하학적 구조, 선과 점의 형태, 그리고 일관된 선 두께입니다. 이러한 원칙들은 전체 시스템 내에서 시각적 조화와 구조적 균형을 이룹니다. 각 아이콘은 공통된 디자인 논리를 기반으로, 다양한 아이디어를 표현하면서도 통일된 조형성을 유지하도록 정교하게 제작되었습니다. 이 시스템을 통해 SM의 아이덴티티는 창의성과 정밀함을 함께 담아냅니다. 비틀린 선은 움직임과 독창성을, 기하학적 질서와 균형 잡힌 선 두께는 안정성과 명료함을 상징합니다. 이러한 요소들이 조화를 이루어, 다양한 맥락 속에서도 독창적이면서 유연하게 적용될 수 있는 시각 언어를 완성합니다. The vision of the SM Pictogram Project is to evolve SM Entertainment’s identity into a universal system of visual expression. By developing a unified pictogram language, the project aims to communicate intuitively while preserving the brand‘s distinctive symbolic character. Through this, it expands the SM identity into daily contexts and establishes a sustainable framework that represents the brand’s creative philosophy. The pictograms are designed around six core principles from the SM symbol: twisted details¹, 45° angles², rounded end lines³, geometric structures⁴, line & dot forms⁵, and consistent line weights⁶. These principles ensure visual harmony and structural balance across the entire system. Each icon is meticulously crafted to represent diverse ideas while remaining cohesive through shared design logic. Through this system, SM‘s identity is expressed with both creativity and precision. The twisted lines suggest motion and originality, while the geometric order and balanced line weights emphasize stability and clarity. Together, they form a visual language that is distinctive yet adaptable across varied contexts. IVE Symbol design for @ivestarship IVE @ivestarship 심볼은 I, V, E 세 글자가 곡선적으로 얽히며 하나의 형태를 이룬다. V는 하트와 동시에 악마의 꼬리를 연상시켜 사랑의 양면성—순수함과 파괴성—을 동시에 상징한다. 보라빛 배경은 몽환적이고 신비로운 무드를 더해 아이브의 어두운 내면, 반전된 감정 등을 드러낸다. IVE 심볼은 Evil Cupid의 아이콘으로서 사악하면서도 매혹적인 사랑을 시각적으로 형상화하며, 앨범 전반의 다크하고 시크한 스타일링과 긴장감 있는 콘셉트를 응축한 상징으로 기능한다. The symbol intertwines the letters I, V, and E into a single flowing form, with the V evoking both a heart and a devil’s tail, symbolizing the duality of love—its purity and destructiveness. The purple background adds a dreamy, mysterious atmosphere, revealing IVE’s darker inner world and reversed emotions. Beyond a simple logo, the symbol serves as an icon of Evil Cupid, visually embodying a love that is both wicked and alluring, while encapsulating the album’s dark, chic styling and tension-filled concept.
아모레퍼시픽은 코스메틱 기업으로, 경기도 기흥과 오산에 대규모 생산시설을 보유하고 있다. 본 프로젝트에서는 오산과 기흥의 생산공장을 비롯해 아모레 팩토리, 원료식물원, 아카이브 등 다양한 시설물에 적용되는 사이니지용 픽토그램을 개발하였다. 픽토그램의 설계에 앞서, 아모레퍼시픽 고유의 정체성을 담아내기 위해 아모레 심볼, 로고, 전용 서체를 분석하였다. 심볼의 ‘한 선으로 연결된 형태’와 로고타입의 ‘기하학적 구성’을 두 가지 주요 디자인 방향성으로 설정하고, 아모레퍼시픽의 전용 국문 서체인 ‘아리따’에서 도출한 기본 도형 ― 원, 삼각형, 사각형의 구조가 반영된 자음들(”ㅇ“, ”ㅁ“, ”ㅅ“)을 중심으로 선형 형태의 픽토그램을 개발하였다. 완성된 픽토그램은 사이니지와 함께 설계되어 각 시설에 적용되었다. Title : Amore Pacific Pictogram Design Client : AMORE PACIFIC @amorepacificgroup.official Task scope : Pictogram Design Date of completion : 2019 Design : Orkr Inc. @orkr_official Amorepacific is one of South Korea’s leading beauty and cosmetics companies, operating large-scale production facilities in Giheung and Osan, Gyeonggi Province. This project involved the development of pictograms for signage to be applied across various facilities, including the Giheung and Osan factories, the Amore Factory, the Botanical Garden for raw materials, and the corporate archive. Prior to the design phase, we conducted an in-depth analysis of Amorepacific’s brand identity—focusing on its symbol, logo, and proprietary typeface—to ensure the pictograms reflected the company’s unique character. Two key visual directions were identified: the “continuous line” structure of the brand symbol and the “geometric composition” of the logotype. Based on these elements, we designed linear pictograms using fundamental shapes—circle, triangle, and square—derived from consonants such as “ㅇ,” “ㅁ,” and “ㅅ” in the company’s exclusive typeface, Arita Medium. The finalized pictograms were designed in conjunction with the overall signage concept and have been implemented across various facilities, harmonizing with each space’s architectural and environmental context.
