𖤱 Can you Xerox this document? 이 문서 제록스 해주시겠어요? 1980년대 이후 인도에서 전국적으로 확산된 ‘제록스 숍 Xerox Shop’은 비공식적으로 정보가 전달되는 거의 유일한 수단이었다. 특히 복사기의 저비용, 즉시성은 방대한 인구의 교육 자원 접근의 불평등을 완화하는 중요한 역할을 했다. 인도에서 복사점이 출력소 이상의 의미를 갖게 되면서, ‘제록스’라는 상표명은 곧 ‘복사하다’라는 일반 명사로 자리잡았다. ‘혹시 이것 좀 제록스 해줄래?’, ‘제록스 사본을 제출하세요.’처럼 ‘제록스’는 일상에서의 반복적인 사용과 사회적 습관으로 정보 유통의 표준 언어로 인식되었다. 1960-1990년대 미국과 유럽의 실험미술가들이 제록스 복사기를 활용해 ‘제록스 아트 Xerox Art’를 전개했다면, 인도에서는 복사기가 예술적 실험의 기록보다는 지역 출판, 소규모 인쇄, 페이퍼백 문화의 기반으로 기능했다. 《Can you Xerox this document?》에서는 인도의 제록스 문화와 제록스가 일반명사화되어 일상적 표준으로 기능한 현상을 살펴보고, 넓은 층위에서의 지식 생산과 기록문화를 만들어나간 구조적 장치로서의 ‘제록스 숍 Xerox Shop’을 인덱싱했다. 𖤱 The 'Xerox Shop', which has spread nationwide in India since the 1980s, was almost the only means of informational communication. In particular, the low cost and immediacy of the photocopier played an important role in alleviating inequality in access to educational resources of the vast population. As copy shops in India became more than output stations, the trademark name Xerox soon became the general noun of "copy." Xerox was recognized as the standard language for information distribution due to repeated daily use and social habits, such as "Can you do this for me?" and "Please submit a copy of Xerox." While experimental artists in the 1960s and 1990s used Xerox copiers to develop Xerox Art, in India, copiers functioned as the basis of local publishing, small-scale printing, and paperback culture rather than recording artistic experiments. "Can you Xerox this document?" examines the Xerox culture of India and the phenomenon that Xerox has become a general noun and functions as a daily standard, and indexes the Xerox Shop as a structural device that has created knowledge production and recording culture on a wide level. 인덱싱(Indexing)을 예술과 디자인의 맥락에서 바라보며, 이를 작품으로 구현한 사례와 관련 도서를 함께 살펴보고, 인덱싱이 예술 및 디자인 실천에서 가지는 가능성을 함께 모색하는 시간을 가졌습니다. 자리를 마련해주신 최찬숙 선생님, 함께해주신 학생 여러분께 감사드립니다.

추계예술대학교 미술창작학부 서양화/현대미술전공 ✿ The Department of Chugye University for the Arts gave a special lecture on 「Indexing as Art」. We looked at Indexing in the context of art and design, looked at examples of implementing it as a work and related books, and explored the possibilities of Indexing in art and design practice together. Prof. Choi Chan-sook, thank you to the students who joined us for the wonderful occasion. Softindex, III. Mirror, Without Resolution, On the Body Reflected Here 𓏲 〈Softindex〉는 최찬숙 작가님 @chan_sook_choi 의 작업 목록을 재정렬하여 만든 인덱스로, 큰 맥락의 세 가지 주제, 연도, 작업 유형, 포괄하거나 포함되지 않는 유형의 작업들을 명확하게 분류하면서도 하나의 유기적인 관계를 맺을 수 있도록 구성했습니다. 한국어, 영어 두 종류로 각 앞면에는 작가의 사진 작품이 인쇄되어 있습니다. 𓏲 〈Softindex〉는 아래 전시에서 작가에 의해 간헐적으로 배포됩니다.
