50주년을 맞은 월간 디자인의 6월호에 객원 편집장으로 참여했습니다. 제가 잡은 주제는 <그래픽 디자인의 50가 도구> 입니다. 가늠표, 가름끈으로 시작해 확대경, 활자로 마무리되는 리스트입니다. “도구 자체가 디자인은 아니지만 이것들이 없다면 디자인도 없다.” “도구 역사에는 일정한 패턴이 있다. 새로운 도구가 등장할 때마다 저항이 따르고, 그에 동원되는 말은 시대를 불문하고 놀라울 만큼 유사하다. “이전 기술보다 품질이 떨어진다”, “창작자의 정신이나 인간성이 결여되어 있다”, “디자인의 본질을 훼손한다” 등등. The theme I chose is ”50 Tools of Graphic Design“ — a list that begins with a register mark and a bookmark ribbon, and closes with a magnifying glass and type. ”Tools themselves are not design, but without them, there is no design.“ ”There is a consistent pattern in the history of tools. Every time a new tool emerges, resistance follows — and the language marshaled against it is remarkably similar across every era. ‘The quality is inferior to the previous technology.’ ‘It lacks the spirit or humanity of the creator.’ ‘It undermines the very essence of design.’ And so on. (…) This resistance has rarely won, and it won‘t in the future either.“ ”Even as tools have changed, our fundamental purpose has not. That purpose is to bring order to ambiguous information, and to achieve the finest visual work possible within the technological limits of the age. Tools have always prevailed, and they always will — but turning the spoils of that victory into genuine achievements of design. It is not only about editing and binding, but also about concepts and exploration. Design gives form to thought and transforms knowledge into experience. The persistent pursuit of beauty reflects book designers’ attentiveness to both form and content, and their ongoing search for the most fitting relationship between the two. In this issue of Design360°, we invite book designers from different countries and regions to explore, through the theme of “what are the most beautiful books,” the significance and possibilities of book design in the digital age. Perhaps we can imagine that “the most beautiful books” do not exist solely within competitions and awards, but is instead embodied in every moment of reading that reveals the openness and possibilities of design.
