Your muscles, metabolism, and brain rely on amino acids to function properly. Without enough of them, energy levels can drop and crashes become more frequent. Mood can also be affected. Protein helps produce neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, which play a key role in motivation, emotional balance, and a sense of calm. Feeling more anxious or low than usual? Blood sugar fluctuations caused by not eating enough protein can lead to irritability, shakiness, and strong sugar cravings. Craving sweets all the time? It may not be about willpower. Sometimes it’s simply your body looking for quick energy because it isn’t receiving steady nourishment. During menopause, protein needs often increase rather than decrease. Maintaining muscle mass, supporting metabolism, and protecting brain health all become more important at this stage.
