In Brazil, more producers are showing that beekeeping and soybean farming can coexist - and even complement each other - when good stewardship sits at the center of field decisions. Healthy pollinator populations are part of healthy landscapes. Protecting them doesn’t mean choosing between nature and productivity - it’s about planning, care, and collaboration, especially during key periods when bees are active. In Brazil, BASF Agricultural Solutions collaborated with soybean producers and beekeepers to show how responsible practices can benefit both pollinators and farm productivity. Women farmers are disproportionately affected by the impacts of climate change, largely due to the same barriers that limit their access to land, resources, services and decision-making.​​ ​As climate pressures increase, these inequalities threaten livelihoods and food security, with climate change projected to push an additional 158 million women and girls into extreme poverty by 2050.​​ ​At the same time, evidence shows that growth in small-scale agriculture is two to four times more effective at reducing hunger and poverty than growth in other sectors, with women farmers playing a central role in strengthening resilience and supporting sustainable food production.​​ ​ Addressing gender inequalities in agriculture and strengthening the role of women farmers will therefore be essential to improving climate resilience and ensuring sustainable and inclusive food systems.​ ​To help turn this into real impact for farmers and provide reliable climate-smart solutions across key crops, we initiated our Global Carbon Field Trial Program. Earlier this year, we produced the first batches at our new BioHub fermentation plant in Ludwigshafen. 🔬 In this plant, we leverage the process of fermentation to produce biological fungicides and seed treatment, supporting sustainable, integrated crop protection programs for farmers. 🏭 By bringing fermentation production in-house, we combine scientific expertise with industrial-scale manufacturing, increasing flexibility and supply chain resilience. Philipp’s connection to agriculture began at home. Through his wife’s family and their beekeeping tradition, he found his way into a world he was once hesitant to embrace. Productivity in agriculture is not only about resources. It is also about opportunities. Women farmers contribute significantly across agrifood systems, producing up to 50% of the world’s food and as much as 60–80% in developing countries. Yet this contribution does not translate into equal productivity outcomes. Women farmers produce 20 to 30% less than men due to combined forms of exclusion, as both smallholder farmers and as women. Limited access to land, finance, technology and advisory services continues to restrict their potential, while social norms further limit opportunities - including access to more profitable crops. At the same time, targeted support can help unlock this potential. Through initiatives such as Healthy Soils, Prosperous Farmers, a @basf_nunhems_global program which supports tribal smallholder growers, women like Mandadori Soren from India are gaining access to knowledge, improved inputs and market connections, strengthening their productivity and resilience. Addressing these structural barriers is key to a more productive, inclusive and resilient agriculture, and to a more secure future for food production.
