The most common piece of fitness advice is also the most damaging. “Calories in, calories out” gets you to a smaller version of yourself. It doesn’t get you to a stronger one. A faster one. A more capable one. The kid on the left ate 1,800 calories and walked 8,000 steps. Lost weight. Felt weak. Couldn’t run a mile. I didn’t lose weight… I changed identities. The kid on the left thought running was for other people. Thought “in shape” was a personality type he wasn’t born with. Thought discipline was something you either had or didn’t. He was wrong about all of it. The body change is what people see. The identity change is what made the body change possible. Most people try to do it backwards. They go on a diet, hit the gym for 6 weeks, and wonder why they end up right back where they started. They tried to change their body. They never changed who they were. You can’t outwork an identity you haven’t updated.
