The Komatsu PC8000 has long been one of the heavyweight icons of surface mining, with its 42m³ bucket and proven 700-tonne-plus operating class making it a serious production machine. But the new Komatsu PC9000 takes things up another level. With an operating weight of around 884–896 tonnes and a 46–49m³ bucket, it is built for the biggest mining applications and matched to 240–400 short-ton trucks. The Hymac 480 is a landmark in British construction history, marking the 1962 debut of the Hymac brand. Unlike modern 360-degree excavators, the 480 featured a restricted 270-degree swing, powered by a unique system of two hydraulic cylinders driving a chain-and-sprocket mechanism. Produced at the Rhymney Engineering plant in Wales between 1962 and 1966, only 317 units were ever manufactured, making surviving examples rare collector’s items today. It was eventually followed by the Hymac 580, which introduced the full 360-degree rotation that would go on to define the industry.

Bagger 1473, christened as The Blue Wonder, is a Type SRs 1500-series bucket-wheel excavator prototype that was left abandoned in a field in Schipkau, Germany. The excavator had been used at the Tagebau Meuro mine from 1965 to 2002. After it was withdrawn from service, the municipalities of Sentenberg, Großräschen, and Schipkau collaborated to preserve the opencast mining machine. Between August 29 and September 15, 2003, Bagger 1473 was moved approximately 8.5 kilometres (5.3 miles) from the Meuro mine to near the EuroSpeedway Lausitz. Its new location would serve as a monument to the region’s former lignite mining industry. The machine was transported across industrial roads and railways owned by the LMBV, ensuring that public traffic remained unaffected.
