After a frustrating run of swell chases that never quite delivered, I finally struck some gold. Last with the forecasts looking okay, I decided spent three days at Bells Beach/Torquay filming clean 5–10ft surf mostly at Winki with great winds. It was also special returning to where I landed my first professional filming job back in 1981, when Simon Anderson introduced the Thruster. Then on the fourth day headed to Tasmania & gambled on a Shipstern Bluff forecast that had been downgraded day after day—but thankfully it paid off. With 5:00am start last Friday with a tricky low-tide boat launch (in the dark), and then we documented an unforgettable pink sunrise as we reached the lineup. Before long, Shipsterns was producing some nice clean first light bombs with @mat_tildesley photographing @jimmy_mckean & @tyler_hx with his flash. The biggest surprise came when I asked our boat captain @simonnelson37 to edge the Shark Cat boat a little closer to the bowl for a better camera angle. Moments later, a solid 12–15ft set appeared out of nowhere, launching the boat almost vertically into the air! Everyone in the lineup watched as we crashed back after down fully leaving the water before bursting into laughter, relieved we were all okay. It was an incredible day with some epic waves, committed surfing, and plenty of unforgettable moments—all captured on tape... except for our flying boat! (anyone from land that might’ve shot it, let me know) The full edit will be on SURFING VISIONS in a few days.
