The U.S. turns 250 this week. So how is the country faring? On one recent Friday, @esquire set out on a mission to better understand America, by spending time with Americans from coast to coast. Reporters went fishing, they went farming, they flew, they partied, they ate Italian beef. What did they find? A country full of people doing their best. Rachel grew up as the beloved daughter in the Kerr family, who were devout, close-knit Baptists. Then she married Josh Piland — a former Marine turned Pentecostal true believer — and her faith took a turn. As Rachel and Josh embraced an extreme belief in divine healing, they began rejecting doctors and medicine, instead trusting prayer alone to keep their children alive. Rachel’s parents and brothers watched with growing alarm, unsure how to intervene without losing her entirely. Then Rachel and Josh’s newborn got sick. For this weekend home atop a grassy sun-soaked headland on the Mornington Peninsula in Melbourne, Australia, the owners desired something earthy and calming and in harmony with its dazzling ocean setting. They also wanted a layout to accommodate three generations in their leisure time, including three grown-up children and a number of grandchildren, without stepping on one another’s toes, says designer Andrew Parr. The European Union is considering major new restrictions on children’s and teens’ social-media access — including age limits, bans, and phased access — and may require platforms to prove their services aren’t harmful before allowing for young users. A panel of experts recommended using a phased approach, including “no screens at all” for children under 3, supervised internet use for those under 13, and some limits for older teens. European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen said her Cabinet will review the findings and propose action “after the summer,” though any legislation would still need approval from the European Parliament and all 27 EU member states before taking effect.
