As the 2026 Winter Olympic Games come to a close, we look back at MIT Professor of the practice Carlo Ratti carrying the torch he designed through the streets of Turin, Italy, earlier this January. Photo: Milano Cortina 2026
During Independent Activities Period (IAP) at MIT, student-athletes have a unique opportunity to: • Take graduate-level courses • Build startups • Conduct research • Intern in Boston + beyond #lacrosse #neurotech #startups #aerospace #ai
Ever wondered what a quantum engineer actually does in a day? ⚛️ Dr. Holly Stemp, a postdoctoral researcher at MIT’s RLE, shares a glimpse — moving between team meetings and lab work, preparing and testing quantum devices at extremely low temperatures. It’s a behind-the-scenes look at the precision, collaboration, and problem-solving that go into building quantum computers. #QuantumEngineering #ResearchLife #GraduateStudies #STEMCareers #WomenInSTEM #AcademicLife #ScienceAndEngineering #RLE #MIT

This year’s torches for the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games were designed by MIT Professor of the Practice Carlo Ratti. A native of Turin, Italy, and a globally respected designer and architect, Ratti approached the design much as he does when guiding students in his lab. “It is about what the object or the design is to convey,” Ratti says. “How it can touch people, how it can relate to people, how it can transmit emotions. That’s the most important thing. See 🔗 in bio to read the MIT News article. #winterolympics #winterolympics2026

During MIT’s Independent Activities Period, MIT community members can step inside MIT.nano’s cleanroom and fabricate their own chip! Pictured here, participants learn how to operate the PicoTrack, a tool that paints the wafer with a one-micron thin layer of photosensitive material. Next, the wafer goes inside the MLA-150 maskless aligner, which patterns the wafer so that certain parts are exposed to ultraviolet light in the shape of the images. Using a developer, the group dissolves the exposed parts until only the oxide film and shiny aluminum remain. After a trip into a plasma etcher where reactive oxygen removes the photoresist, the wafer is ready to be cleaved into chips. #nanoscience #nanotechnology #chips #engineering #ThisIsMIT
