Kate, a PhD candidate in Civil and Environmental Engineering in the MIT/ WHOI Joint Program, is conducting research this summer with SINTEF Ocean and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, Norway. “They really got me with that ‘star in a bottle’ line,” laughs Zoe Fisher ’23, SM ’23 about her inspiration to study materials for fusion power plants. She first heard commercial fusion described as a quest to create the energy equivalent of a star in a bottle in her MIT Freshman Pre-Orientation Program and is now pursuing her doctoral research at MIT’s Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering.
