Here’s the thing 👇🏻 I’m not pro OR anti raw milk. Plain and simply, the safely of raw milk lies within appropriate udder prep + cleaning, milk processing procedures, testing, sanitizing equipment, cow health, and SO much more. One mistake can easily lead to contaminated milk. Contaminated milk = unsafe milk. If you choose to milk your own dairy animals or find a small farm that you align with, then great! This choice has inherent risks, but enjoy that raw milk. If the risk of raw milk isn’t something that you’re interested in taking on, then great! It’s breeding season, and my barn has never smelled worse 🤪 If I wanted to start raising goats next spring, then this is what I would do 👇🏻 🐐 Find a farm that aligns with your values and goals for raising goats. Are you looking for goats that are holistically raised or conventionally raised? No judgment either way, but aligning your goals makes sense. 🐐 Speaking of goals - what are yours? Pets, milking, brush clearing, etc? Different goats suit different purposes. 🐐 What type of pasture set up do you have? Are you able to rotate through to reduce risk of parasites? 🐐 What type of housing and fencing are you planning to use? Do you have a way to lock up your goats at night and predator proof (and goat proof!) fencing? 🐐 Do you have access to a livestock vet? What about a goat mentor? 🐐 If you’re planning to breed, are you able to set up multiple pastures to keep does + bucks separate? And are you okay with the stink? (I rarely smell it anymore, ha) And don’t forgot - you get what you pay for. A budget goat is usually a surefire ticket toward health problems. Ready for goats?
