This month, Gypsum presented a performance inspired by the theme “Popular Yongsan.” Guitarists Na Dong-hun and Choi Gi-yoon, together with bassist Noh Gwang-rae, filled the museum’s summer afternoon with an energetic blend of jazz, pop, and Latin American rhythms. The programme featured Gypsum’s 〈Ganon〉, distinguished by its Spanish-style guitar riff, along with songs including 〈Don’t Know Why〉, 〈Samba de Viajante〉, and 〈How Deep Is Your Love〉...and so on. After Korea’s liberation in 1945, returning Koreans and refugees from the North began settling in Haebangchon. From the 1960s, the neighbourhood developed a thriving knitting industry known locally as “yokko.” Located near Seoul Station and Namdaemun Market, Haebangchon grew into an important knitwear production hub. Small, often unmarked workshops worked together across every stage of production, from yarn preparation and knitting to processing, washing, pressing and finishing. Although only around 20 workshops remained as of 2024, compared with approximately 300 during the 1980s and early 1990s, the craft continues in the neighbourhood today. 【성벽 밖으로 자라난 서울, 수선총도】 조선 건국 초기, 서울은 약 10만 명의 주민을 수용할 수 있도록 설계된 계획도시였습니다. 하지만 인구와 상업이 성장하면서 사람들의 생활공간은 점차 성벽 밖으로 확장되었습니다. 용산역사박물관 소장 〈수선총도〉는 이러한 변화가 나타나던 19세기 서울의 모습을 담은 목판본 고지도입니다. 지도에는 궁궐과 종묘, 하천과 도로, 시전과 마을 등 당시 서울의 도시 공간이 정밀하게 표시되어 있습니다. 특히 용산역사박물관 소장본에는 숭례문과 돈의문 밖으로 이어지는 지역이 손으로 덧그려져 있어, 성벽 너머로 확장되던 서울의 모습을 보여줍니다. 성벽 안에서 성벽 밖으로 자라나던 서울. 고지도 위에 남겨진 19세기 도시의 변화를 만나보세요. 〈수선총도〉는 2024년 3월 21일 서울특별시 유형문화유산으로 지정되었습니다. 용산역사박물관 1층 상설전시실의 첫 번째 공간인 ‘한양의 길목 용산’에서 만나볼 수 있으며, 유물의 안전한 보존을 위해 진품과 복제품을 교대로 전시하고 있습니다. 더 자세한 이야기는 용산역사박물관 소식지 YOHIM Vol. 2의 「소장품 수선총도」에서 확인하실 수 있습니다. 【Seoul Beyond the City Walls: Suseon Chongdo】 In the early Joseon period, Seoul was planned as a capital city capable of accommodating approximately 100,000 residents. As its population and commercial activity grew, however, people’s living spaces gradually expanded beyond the city walls. Suseon Chongdo, part of the Yongsan History Museum collection, is a woodblock-printed historical map depicting Seoul in the 19th century. The map shows the city’s urban landscape in detail, including its palaces, Jongmyo Shrine, waterways, roads, marketplaces, and villages. The museum’s copy is particularly significant because areas extending beyond Sungnyemun and Donuimun Gates were added by hand, revealing how Seoul was expanding beyond its fortified walls. Seoul was growing beyond the city walls. Discover the changing urban landscape of the 19th century through this historic map. Suseon Chongdo was designated as a Seoul Tangible Cultural Heritage on 21 March 2024. It can be viewed in “Yongsan, Gateway to Hanyang,” the first section of the permanent exhibition gallery on the museum’s first floor. To ensure the safe preservation of the artefact, the original map and a reproduction are displayed on a rotating basis.
